The 3rd of September, is not only my birthday, but also La rentrée. In France it is probably even more important than new-year, and it’s considered the beginning of a new year after the month of holiday in the south of France/exotic island/undiscovered destination. Children go back to school, new nannies arrive at their families, students have to open their books again and all the offices are back to business.
One of the best moments of la rentrée is buying a new agenda. Picking the one that will match your upcoming year. I remember buying my first agenda ever in high school. It was from Winnie the Pooh, full of colours, drawings and, eventually, cute words from new bff’s. This year I’ve chosen a little pink one with a crocodile cover. Walking around at the Paper department of the BHV admiring all the Moleskin agenda’s, I saw this little pink book, the empty pages full of possibilities to come. I hope it will resemble my year, of almost adulthood, but with an edge of pink.
I would like to take la rentrée as an opportunity for a new start to make resolutions. Each year we make resolutions for the new-year, then halfway through the year we remember them and realise we haven’t been living up to them. Just before summer you try another failing attempt to resolutions, to eventually find yourself in the end of august before you know it. Again, you lost sight of the resolutions during the summer barbecues, nightly swimming’s or in a foreign city.
I just described my own situation… To make a good example I’m going to write down my resolutions, once more. This time with you as my witness. Besides the usual crap (losing weight, be healthier, save money, bla bla bla) I want to have a creative goal. I want to discover the writer in me, and develop that talent.
I’ve been writing before(in Dutch) during my time as an au pair in Paris. Telling stories about my life and the cultural differences gave my friends and family at home the chance to get a little insight in my life abroad. Right now, still living in Paris (not as an au pair), I would like to share my thoughts and opinions with you. So.. my resolution is to write and maintain this blog. With you as my witness I hope you will help me to make it reality by giving me a hand every now and then when I’m getting off track but also to inspire me.
I’m counting on you!
From Paris With Love,
Diwi
