They say that everything you do has consequences for your life. Even the slightest thing, like taking a detour on your way back home to choosing a new cereal brand. It’s kind of terrifying thinking about it.
I’m a curious person, I like to know how things work, who said what and what is going on in the world in general. So that’s why I sometimes ask myself, what if…
I know it’s not a very wise thing to do, considering you will never know what would’ve happened. So why nag yourself about it ? But for me this moment of remembrance and fantasizing helps me finding out what I want. Because whenever I wish to change the past and choose another path, that means I know that I’m not happy with the present or at least what my decision has led up to.
But the reminiscing and the possible what if’s, also make me realise the regrets. Of course everybody has regrets, from “why did I stay in the bar just 5 minutes longer, therefore missed the last metro” or “Why didn’t I take that other job offer“. But for me, those aren’t really regrets, I’m pretty happy with my life at the moment and the path I took.
There is just one thing that I remorse. And that is that I haven’t traveled more during my student life. Right now I’m looking for a new challenge in a new country, but the tiring paperwork that comes with it, is a bit discouraging. During my student time, it would’ve been so much easier. No attachments, student visa, government financial support, etc. But taking the effort to go through all the paperwork, shows that I really want it. And I’ve heard, and experienced, that it usually works out well. Or to say, it works as the law of attraction. I don’t know that much about The Secret (note to myself: start reading), but it sounds interesting. Can you tell me more about it?
Back to regrets. I think, even if you regret something, you’ve chosen that path for a reason. Maybe it was not the right one or it just didn’t work out. Either way, you can always change the outcome if you’re not happy with it. Not by changing the past, but by changing your future. Your future lies in your own hands.
