I like Canadians. The only problem is that they don’t seem to get my sarcasm. An example. I was talking to my colleague at the reception desk when a Canadian girl with whom I share my dormitory came up to us. She asked if she could change rooms. I acted shocked and asked her why she didn’t like my room. She started explaining the situation, but ended with “But I could stay in your room if you like.” She’d rather feel unhappy and uncomfortable in my room whilst being polite, instead of sleeping in an all female dormitory which she would’ve prefered!
Another example was with a Canadian guy. Again I was talking to my colleague at the reception desk (Do they ever work?!) (again sarcasm). This guy had just arrived and had a very Dutch name, so I asked him straight up. He answered that his grandparents where dutch. After a short chat he told me he wanted to start learning German. Again I reacted shocked and insulted. Don’t learn German when you have Dutch heritage! He laughed uncomfortably and understood his grandma’s reaction the week before, when he told her that he was gonna take german lessons. We chatted a little bit more and that was it. I thought… Three days later (I hadn’t seen him around that much cause he was in town for a three days festival) he caught me at breakfast. “I hope I haven’t insulted you when I said I wanted to learn German.” I started laughing and tried to sooth his conscience. apparently I’m a believable actress. Or I have bad humor… Note to self: watch out with sarcasm.
